Axial face seals are custom-molded seals that separate pressure fields in gear pumps and gear motors from each other. They enable the pump to operate at maximum efficiency due to maximum seal tightness and low friction.
Axial face seals are used to separate the pressure fields – both on the input and output side – from each other. These molded seals are required in a wide range of versions and are therefore specifically designed for the respective application, required geometry and anticipated operating parameters.
The sealing materials used are NBR, HNBR and FKM elastomers, frequently combined with thermoplastic backup rings. When our proprietary and high-performance Ultrathan® materials are used, a backup element may not be necessary in spite of high pressure and temperature loads, therefore reducing the variety of parts, and still enabling the design of a robust gear pump with maximum service life.
Two seals are used in a gear pump, one each on the input and output side. These two seals are braced against each other via the sealing areas and the gearwheels. On the one hand, this generates the sealing force that minimizes leakage and hence ensures high efficiency of the gear pump. On the other hand, friction is generated that raises the temperature with a resulting negative impact on oil, seal and gearwheel life, and on efficiency. In addition to a careful selection of the material, low manufacturing tolerances are crucial to achieving an optimal balance of leakage and friction.
The high-precision axial face seals from Parker Prädifa ensure maximum efficiency in gear pumps and gear motors. Due to the extensive materials portfolio, the seals satisfy the challenging service life requirements in all fields of application.
