The On-line Ferrous Wear Meter (OFWM) is an important tool to maximize uptime and minimize operational expenditure of large 2-stroke engines.
Cylinder condition must be monitored visual inspection is only possible when the engine is off. Monitoring of the piston underside drain oil when the engine is running gives essential information on condition and is called scavenge drain oil analysis (SDA).
OFWM provides an accurate means of detecting, measuring and trending the quantity of ferromagnetic material [magnetic iron] suspended in the scavenge drain oil that has been in contact with the piston and liner. With continuous feedback, abrasive and adhesive wear can be monitored in accordance with OEM guidelines which can reduce the cost of ownership, by:
• Optimizing the cylinder oil feed rate
• Wear control
• Optimizing overhaul intervals
OFWM can be used in conjunction with other products in the condition monitoring range, including the FWM+ BN, Water, CCTK, and Total iron, to develop a much deeper understanding of health and operating parameters of these engines.
Features and Benefits
• Permanently mounted to the engine for continuous feedback
• Reliable, requiring minimal crew intervention
• Straightforward installation
• Direct reading in ppm (mg/kg) of magnetic iron (Fe) content in drain oil
• System alerts and alarms including abnormal wear events
The OFWM is constructed using a sophisticated magnetometer adapted for field applications. The flexibility of OFWM means the sensors can be installed to all or selected cylinders. With minimal disruption, installation can be done during port calls and requires minimal drain-line modification together with daisy-chained cabling and a compressed air line. Software is provided to trend, record data, and provide alerts on a conveniently located computer – including alarm outputs. Alternatively, the outputs from sensors can be directly integrated into the engine’s supervisory monitoring system – appearing as a parameter next to more commonly observed pressures and temperatures.
