Ultra violet light is one of the most effective means of controlling a potable water source and ensuring that it is free of active bacteria, virus, mold spores and other pathogens. Globally, each year more people die from drinking biologically contaminated water than all of the world's natural disasters combined, so it is extremely important to decontaminate.

The Parker Village Marine Ultraviolet Light Germicidal System (VMS-3) is designed to provide a germicidal dosage of UV radiation to suspended micro-organisms within the clear water passing through the disinfection chamber. The dosage is a function of both the intensity of the ultraviolet radiation from the lamp and the time the water is exposed. Exposure time is related to the flowrate; the higher the water's flowrate, the shorter the exposure time. This system is rated for maximum 3 GPM flowrate to obtain a full dosage. Water leaving the chamber is instantly ready for use, and no further contact time is required.

In addition, because water tanks are vented to the atmosphere, air-borne contaminates can enter and foul the water. The VMS-3 is typically installed in the distribution system or near the point of use to ensure safe, pure drinking water. By installing a VMS-3 unit on the outlet line, the water will be treated once again with U.V. light, killing any bacteria that are present. With a Parker Village Marine VMS-3 unit mounted after the water tank, there will no longer be a need to shock the tanks with chlorine or chemicals, preventing any chemical aftertaste, and ensuring peace of mind knowing that friends and family will have clean water to drink.

The VMS-3 is intended for use with visually clear water, not colored, cloudy or turbid
water that would impair the transmissivity (flow rate) of the radiation through the water. The VMS-3 is not intended for treatment of water that has an obvious contamination such as raw sewage, nor is it intended to convert wastewater to microbiologically safe drinking water.

Installation:

The Parker Village Marine VMS-3 should be installed in a dry, sheltered location, protected from direct weather and freezing. Because it is possible to form condensation on the outside of the unit during operation, from humidity or water temperature, the installation location should be selected so that dripping condensation cannot damage other equipment.

The unit should be installed closest to the point-of-use and after other water devices (such as de-ionizers, water softeners, carbon filters, prefilters, RO units, storage tanks, pressure tanks and pumps). This reduces the chance of the purified water being recontaminated by bacteria from any of these other units. Remember, UV radiation does not have any residual disinfection properties.

The VMS-3 will function best when mounted horizontally with the connection ports facing upwards, but Parker Village Marine does offer optional mounting clamp sets. Please also remember that the VMS-3 should be connected to the cold water service.


Maintenance:

The ordinary maintenance consists of lamp replacement (every 10,000 hours or annually), a dry service, and cleaning the quartz sleeve when conditions warrant. Please note that Lamp and Quartz Sleeve are easily damaged. Exercise care when handling the lamp.

If clearance space is not available for bulb changeout in place, the chamber must be removed to a bench for the service. In that case, consider isolation valves and union connections to simplify removal and reinstallation of the unit with minimum water spillage.


Warnings and Cautions:

• Germicidal ultraviolet rays are harmful to the eyes and skin
• Avoid exposure to direct or strongly reflected germicidal ultraviolet rays
• Special precautions must be taken since water is present near electrical equipment
• Always disconnect power before performing any maintenance
• Do not restore power until lamp and end caps have been completely reinstalled
