Racor Marine Cartridge Engine Air Filter/Silencers removes contaminants introduced into the air from both outside and inside the vessel.
Racor AFM Series Marine Cartridge Engine Air Filter/Silencers
The Racor Marine Air Filter/Silencer removes both airborne contaminants and contaminants introduced into the air from inside the vessel. Sand, salt, carpet fibers and other contaminants are trapped in the oil-impregnated filter media. Turbocharger noise is reduced by the unique design of the air filter/silencer housing. Additionally, these Air Filter/Silencers are usually used to complete a Closed Crankcase Ventilation Filter system (CCV).
How they work:
Air flows through the corrosion resistant housing by way of multiple side openings to the filter element. The filter element media is oil-impregnated cotton gauze sandwiched between pleated, epoxy-coated aluminum wire-mesh, all held in place with polyurethane adhesive. The element is cleanable using the Racor AFM82006 Cleaning Kit, and must be oiled before using or re-use.
For connection to a CCV (not included), each AFM Series Filter/Silencer has a barbed outlet connection. The CCV outlet is connected to the engine's combustion air inlet via an air intake connector where the filtered blow-by gas is recycled through the combustion process. Oil collected in the CCV Sump is returned to the crankcase through a hose and a drain check valve.

Sizing and Choosing your Marine Air Filter/Silencer
Measure engine room mounting area dimensions to verify the chosen air filter has clearance
An air hose connection fitting and clamps are required to connect to the turbocharger inlet (see 7609 "Accessories for Engine Air Intake Systems" on "Product Support" tab.)
Choose Air Filter/Silencer model according to cubic feet per minute air flow required. Here is an approximate calculation followed by examples:
4-cycle engines: cfm = HP x 2.0
2-cycle engines: cfm = HP x 2.5
Examples:
DDC 12V92TA DDEC 2-cycle - twin turbocharger
826 hp x 2.5 = 2065 cfm
2065 cfm / 2 turbos = 1033 cfm per turbo
= (1) AFM501012 per turbo
Twin Turbo 2-cycle Engine
1110 hp x 2.5 = 2775 cfm
2775 cfm / 2 turbochargers = 1388 cfm per turbo
= (1) AFM601212 per turbo
CAT 3196 4-cycle - twin turbocharger
660 hp x 2.0 = 1320 cfm
1320 cfm /2 turbochargers = 660 cfm per turbo
= (1) AFM408512 per turbo
Or a single larger unit:
= (1) AFM601212 tee connection to both turbo
Note: If space is available, going to the next larger Air Filter/Silencer is recommended.
Consult brochure 7539 "Air Filtration" on "Product Support" tab for other engine displacement air flow calculations
The CCV models typically associated with each Marine Air Filter will be found on the "Technical Specifications" tab once the air filter/silencer is selected.
